The Celebration Foundation was pleased to present Patrick Smith’s Florida Is a Land Remembered on March 22.  The audience was treated to an immersive experience as Rick Smith detailed his father’s literary journey.  Rick’s lecture was a multi-media event that included wonderful video interviews with his father talking about his experiences in researching Florida’s “Cracker” history.  By the end of the evening, you really felt as though you had met the author himself. Son Rick helped deliver his father’s story with humor and charming family stories.

For those of you who don’t know, Patrick D. Smith is best known as the author of A Land Remembered, a novel that truly captures the spirit of Florida’s past.  It’s been said that this book should be issued to all who cross the Florida border.  And when you think about Florida pioneer history, it really wasn’t all that long ago!

Lectures like this truly offer Celebration residents “a sense of place.”  We are privileged to live in such a beautiful, modern community but it’s important to remember where we came from.  Respect for Florida’s environment, indigenous people, culture and heritage can only benefit our town as we move forward.

Proceeds from the evening benefitted Thriving in Place and Celebration Lifelong, two of the Celebration Foundation’s life-enriching programs. To learn more about the Celebration Foundation, its programs and upcoming events, please visit our website
