In our Fall 2024 course, “The American Army in Northwest Europe – the Campaigns of 1944-1945,” we discussed the American Army in Europe in WWII, from Normandy to the Elbe. Such a vast subject deserved more time than we could allocate. In this course we will focus on the final campaigns in Germany from January to May 1945, allowing us to spend far more time on the critical five months which ended with the American Army near Berlin and Prague in May 1945. Beginning with the American Army’s counteroffensive against a defeated German Army in the Bulge on January 3, 1945, we will discuss how the American Army attacked to approach the Rhine River for the Allied crossings on a broad front into Central Germany. These battles of January and February 1945 culminated in the Rhine River assaults and the final battles in Germany of March to May 1945. We will discuss critical aspects of the strategic situation, the operational and logistical options, and the tactical actions of the American Army, as well as how the final campaigns unfolded, the political and diplomatic issues facing our military leaders, and the operational outcomes which shaped the post-war era of a divided Germany. Materials fee will cover resources needed for the course.

Calligraphy means “beautiful handwriting.” It is the art of drawing letters using specific strokes. You do not need to have lovely handwriting prior to participating in class; we will learn to draw letters to create a specific style. All levels of expertise are welcome. Beginners will learn pen technique, spacing, style and practice (and it does take practice). For those who are more advanced, Nancy will have various alphabets available for you to learn/brush up on. Join us to discover that calligraphy is fun and to start or re-kindle an enjoyable hobby. You are welcome to use calligraphy pens you already have. If you are a beginner, you will be sent a small supply list prior to class.
Nancy has lots of varied hobbies: sewing, painting, furniture refinishing, gardening, and crafting. She appreciates teaching and taking classes and finds them educational, enjoyable, motivating and encouraging. Her desire to create unique projects and the skills she learns from curiosity and experimentation keep life interesting. There’s always something to discover!
We’ll begin this course by describing a recent critical review of NASA, how its deficiencies are being fixed, what to expect from a revitalized organization, the new space race (no, it’s not the Russians this time), and how all this will benefit those of us on Earth. We’ll answer your one big question: Why are NASA, Elon Musk’s SpaceX, and a growing number of commercial aerospace companies spending billions of dollars (including billions of our tax dollars) to colonize the Moon (and Mars). Finally, we’ll describe recently introduced websites, free to all, that can be your authoritative “go-to” sources for what’s going on with the American space program.

Sleep, memory, and exercise are foundational to healthy aging. Disturbances of sleep, memory and exercise are harbingers of illness. We will learn about ways to optimize each as a means to extend our individual healthspan. Examples include sleep training, using sleep as an immune booster, and discovering the risks of too much sleep. When are memory lapses “normal” aging, and how can we determine when there is abnormal decline? Exercise can prolong our functional abilities as we age and clearly also helps with cognition, but how do we know when our minds and bodies need a break?
Instructor: Wilhelmina Korevaar
Dr. Korevaar is a retired anesthesiologist who continues to serve as a Volunteer Faculty member at the UCF College of Medicine. She has previously taught numerous courses for Celebration Lifelong with a focus on the science and practicalities of maintaining health through lifestyle choices.

In this course, we will create gorgeous papers that you will be able to use to make greeting cards or in collage projects. We will combine two watery mediums where letting go of control and just having fun will reap colorful rewards. Brusho watercolor crystals, sprinkled and sprayed, create bursts of firework-like patterns. Bleeding tissue paper can create random patterns and blended colors depending on how it is torn and placed. Both mediums offer a wide range of effects depending on how much water is used. We will experiment with them to create beautiful papers! Come, let go of control and get colorful! You bring your watercolor paper to class and Meryl will supply the Brusho and tissue paper.

In this course we will use old Celebration News magazines to make glass-like, pandora-style beads. By upcycling the magazine, we can customize the beads with words and logos to show our community pride. In the first two classes, we will make different style beads that will then be collected for processing. When the beads are returned to you in class three, they will be coated with uv-hardened resin that gives them a smooth glass look. Week three we will use the beads to make bracelets, earrings or keychains.

This course will offer you the tools and application experience to “up your photo game” from snapshots to art.
NOTE: This course is not designed as a beginners’ photography course, but as a course for those wanting to enhance their photography skills.
