Though the saying might be overused, it resonates for the Celebration Marathon and Thriving in Place. Running a marathon is hard work…you are not sure what to expect, it takes preparation, planning and training. You are bound to have setbacks. You learn about recovery and resilience. You learn to appreciate small victories.
Life is like a marathon…particularly in your later years. You didn’t know what to expect at the beginning, but life…like a marathon…has highs and lows, a few setbacks along the way, people cheering you on, and fond memories of many great moments.
So how appropriate that Thriving In Place was born ready to cheer on and support all the runners and volunteers participating in the sixth annual Town of Celebration Marathon and Half Marathon on Sunday, January 27, 2019.
The festivities include a weekend of events culminating with the races on Sunday. The EXPO is hosted at Town Hall on Friday, January 25, 5-8 pm and Saturday, January 26, 10 am – 6 pm where runners and walkers from all over the United States will check in and receive their race numbers, good bags and promotional items. Expo exhibitors led by presenting sponsor AdventHealth will feature massages, skin screenings, a photo booth, information on foot care, fitness equipment as well as exercise clothing, accessories and much more.
This year, Thriving In Place invites all Thrive members and volunteers to participate by working at the EXPO and being part of the ROWDY group stationed on the corner of Blue Sage Street and Oak Shadows. We will be making lots of noise and applaud the runners as they make the turn onto the Aquila boardwalk. Obnoxious noisemakers will be provided. No worries, we will let the neighbors know!
Thriving In Place, other local community non-profits and high school seniors have been the beneficiaries of the proceeds raised by a dedicated group of marathon volunteers. Over the past five years, more than $400,000 has been raised and distributed. Join us as we give back to a group who has done so much for all of us!
