During a recent spring stay in Utah, I explored several botanical gardens featuring the plants (mainly cacti) of the southwest and was impressed by their colors, shapes, and beauty. I rendered 3 pictures of the cactus family that we will color together in vibrant colors, and which can be exhibited as a triptych.
Our color projects are on a “no need to know how to draw” basis. You will be emailed the templates (PDF) and the step-by-step guidelines, which you will bring to class. You will also receive a list of materials that can be easily purchased through Amazon, Target, or Blick. Returning colorists should have most of the materials on hand. Join us to create beautiful artwork that you can proudly display!

In 1920, US life expectancy at 3 years of age was around 58. By 2020, average life expectancy at age 3 had risen to about 75. This course will examine the reasons for such a dramatic change, with particular attention to advancements in medical science. Improved health for all Americans resulted from improvements in sanitation and public health (clean water, clearer air, personal hygiene, and disease monitoring). An evolving understanding of germ theory (antisepsis, antibiotics, vaccines, and the immune system) promises greater longevity. Advances in maternal and fetal care, anesthesiology and trauma care, and an appreciation of modifiable social and economic factors impacting access to medical care are associated with embracing human diversity. An improved understanding of lifestyle factors that affect health (smoking, alcohol, diet, activity, and sleep) has led to an emphasis on modifiable factors in chronic illness.
Before 1910, US medical education was unregulated, lacked a scientific foundation, and varied substantially around the country. Physicians often travelled to Europe for specialty education. The Flexner Report sought to define minimum requirements for medical education; it took the insights and hardships of the Great Influenza Pandemic to bring focused and coordinated change. This course will describe how America achieved preeminence in medical science, and what may lie ahead in the reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While not a native Floridian, Dyan has spent most of her adult years here and has lived in many parts of the state. She enjoys travel and prefers to experience places rather than just visit them, and loves going off the beaten path. During the years she homeschooled her daughter, Dyan took her around the world by house- and pet-sitting. Currently an instructional designer for a large corporation, she spends her daily downtime in the pool, on Celebration’s trails, and at Disney. Her time off from work usually takes her exploring places old and new, near and far. This past January, Dyan returned to Thailand for a second time, but to a new location, the Elephant Nature Park. Dyan will share her love of elephants and what she gained from her recent volunteer experience.

This course seeks to examine the Bible as a literary creation of men and women who were influenced by the cultural contexts in which they wrote and the theological goals they sought to achieve. Week 1 will present conclusions among critical biblical scholars concerning who wrote the Bible and when; how the specific books came to be included (while others, excluded); methods by which scholars came to these conclusions, and the various ways in which the Bible has been interpreted over time. Week 2 will turn an eye toward the Bible’s (mis)appropriation to support positions on issues as abortion, homosexuality, immigration, and the role of women in society. Week 3 will discuss the historicity of the Jewish exodus from Egypt; Mary’s perpetual virginity; and the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. Can you think of a better course to prepare you for the holidays?

It is often said that the best camera is the one you have with you, and for most of us, that camera is our smartphone. Since this class was last presented in 2024, much has changed. Apple has added new features to the full range of iPhone models, and the introduction of AI has improved and simplified editing.
The focus of this class is to help you take quality photographs with your smartphone. We will explore camera features, learn techniques for controlling composition, focus, and exposure, and explore editing apps to make your photos pop.
During sessions two and three, students will have the opportunity to take photos and share them with the class. Students can use either an iPhone or an Android phone for the class, but all demonstrations will be with an iPhone.
