It’s here again… another US Presidential election. Everyone has an opinion, even if they shouldn’t, and everyone can predict the future, even though they’re always wrong. So let’s break down the myths of politics against the economy. What really happens during an election year to the markets, inflation, and growth? We will look at the current election and some past elections to analyze and eliminate the noise. This course will be filled with accurate stats and numbers that disprove most of the unfounded drabble that comes out of your friend’s (or enemy’s) mouth! It’ll also show you the real results of your friends that say things like “I’m just going to wait and see”.

Learn all the fundamentals of cake decorating — icings, color borders, stars, even the rose — in just three weeks the Wilton Way. In Week 1, participants learn how to bake a cake, split and fill the cake, and make frosting. In Week 2, participants will bring their frosted cakes to class to decorate. They will learn basic borders, writing and printing, working with piping gel, and how to start a rose. In Week 3, students learn how to create floral sprays, leaves, and roses. The Tony Awards recognize excellence in live Broadway theatre. So, join us as we pay homage to some of the Tony awardees of the past for Best Musical. Expect some surprises! We’ll use extensive video clips to explore some of the famous and lesser-known musicals that have won the Tony as well as thrill to iconic performances. As a bonus, the 77th Tony Awards Ceremony will be broadcast on April 16, 2024 — giving us a great opportunity to discuss our most beloved art form!

Don Salvo is a co-founder of the Playwrights’ Lab at the Pittsburgh Public Theatre and teaches playwriting at Celebration Lifelong. Don’s play, Unraveled, a Heideman Award Finalist for Drama from the Actors Theatre of Louisville, was produced off-Broadway and introduced Joe Manganiello to New York audiences. Don is a published playwright and has had multiple plays performed throughout the country. His play Naked Player is available for viewing on YouTube. A professionally trained dancer/actor, he is a proud member of Actors’ Equity and has performed in over 60 productions with the Kenley Players. Don earned degrees from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, the University of Pittsburgh, Duquesne University, and was a Fellow in the School of Speech and Drama at Northwestern University.

The best camera is the one you have with you, and, for most of us, that camera is our smartphone. Over the past few years, smartphone cameras have added features that rival DSLR cameras and the quality of the resulting photographs has drastically improved. This course is designed to help you take quality photographs with “only” a smartphone. Using our smartphones, we will explore the camera features — learn about controlling composition, focus and exposure; use editing apps to “fix” photos; and learn strategies for storing, organizing, sharing, and showcasing photographs. During the second of the three classes, we will take a short “Photo Walk” for a hands-on camera experience. You can use either an iPhone or Android phone for the class, but all instructor demonstrations will be with an iPhone.

She taught art in New York for 33 years, and has exhibited her photography in venues on Long Island and New York City. Claude Monet, the founder of the Impressionist Art Movement and the precursor of Abstract Art, was deemed mad by art critics for his painting of “Impression, Sunrise” at Le Havre harbor, but he became art history’s most influential painter of the mid-to-late 19th and early 20th centuries. Monet’s life journey is an enthralling tale of failure, perseverance, genius, triumph, and beauty. A rebel painter, he was obsessed by the effect of light on his subjects and the creation of impressions of landscapes, portraits, and gardens made by using short brush strokes and a vibrant color palette. Join us as we embark on a journey that will take us from Monet’s childhood through his early artistic endeavors and failures and that will explore the elements of Impressionism in Monet’s most famous early works and masterpieces.

Arlene Sánchez-Busse has a BA in Anthropology from the University of Puerto Rico and a JD from the University of Puerto Rico, School of Law. Arlene spent twenty-five years as a practicing attorney in the Courts of Puerto Rico, specializing in family law and children’s rights. She spent ten years teaching English. She studied painting with Andres Bueso, one of the Caribbean’s foremost painters. Arlene has studied the Impressionist Movement for many years and has traveled to museums all over the world to view the masterpieces of Monet, Renoir, Morisot, Degas, Pissarro and Manet. She has also visited many of the sites and towns in France and Europe that inspired their paintings.

Learn and explore new techniques using colored pencils. We will color spring floral designs rendered on gray tone mixed media paper. Gray tone paper allows us to color with an emphasis on white and light tones creating luminosity and vibrancy. Flowers such as gardenias, white lillies, pale colored roses and the like contrast the background gray toned paper, creating beautifully rendered floral designs. Our coloring projects are on a “no need to know how to draw” basis. You will be e-mailed the templates (PDF) of the drawings and the step-by-step simple coloring guidelines which you will bring to class. You will also receive via e-mail a list of the materials, including the gray toned paper, which can be easily purchased through Amazon, Blick, Target, or any art supply store. (Repeat colorists should have almost all of them already at hand). Join us to create beautiful flower artwork that you can proudly display. Our extended two-hour class time gives everyone time to relax and color at a leisurely pace.

Join us as we make three types of international breads, which you will be able to take home and bake. At the beginning of each class, we will taste samples of the three homemade breads. We will then measure, mix, and knead the bread dough, by hand, in a large mixing bowl. (Recommended: 13-Quart 16″ Stainless Steel mixing bowl) All measuring, mixing and kneading are completed in one mixing bowl. You will be provided with all necessary ingredients, including pizza flour (00), pita flour (King Arthur High Gluten) and bagel flour, yeast, seasonings, and toppings for bagels (sesame seeds, Everything Bagel seasoning, sharp cheddar cheese, and egg wash). At the end of each class, you will take your dough home to finish proofing and baking. You will receive a detailed set of directions for each of these breads. You may bring a tea towel to cover your dough during proofing or use clear wrap, which will be provided.

As early as the 1840s, connecting the Atlantic Ocean with Tampa Bay became a crucial goal of the settlers of Central Florida. By the 1850s, existing dirt trails eventually became the desired route for a much needed, but not yet built, railroad from Lake Monroe to Tampa Bay. But one railroad company after another failed to build that railroad until 1880. When finally completed, the legacy of the South Florida Railroad of 1881 was to establish what we know today as the I-4 Corridor. This course follows the development of “Middle Florida”, a remote land that ultimately became accessible by the railroads.

Week 1: Cuba … Travel to Havana and Prove the World Wrong! with Tim Johnson
Visit Havana with Tim to see and experience a town that is frozen in time in the 1950s. Engage the locals, feast on fantastic food, re-kindle your youth and memories as well as marvel at the hundreds of buildings from the 19th century.

Week 2: Driving Through Provence, France – with Meryl Rachlin and Bill Grindl
Join Bill and Meryl for another scenic driving tour, this time in Provence, France. We will visit several charming hilltop villages and, yes, everyone’s got a castle. Provence is right out of paintings in museums — with landscapes set with rocky outcrops, rambling wild fields, and villages of stone that climb right into the blue skies!

Week 3: A Photo Tour of Hungary – with Jane Wahl
View with Jane the Palace, bridges across the Danube River, and the ornate Parliament Building, along with markets featuring peppers, paprika, and palacsinta! The landscape outside the city is equally intriguing, with beautiful sunflower fields and rustic villages. We’ll talk about some of the history of the area, with a little insight into Hungarian immigrants who settled in the U.S. in the early 1900s, and even talk about a TikTok-er who has immersed himself in the culture.

Meryl also creates unique 3D dog portraits upon commission, managed the Celebration Art & Wine Strolls, and is a member of Celebration Lifelong Steering Committee. Meryl continues to learn new arts and craft mediums to teach at Celebration Lifelong.

Jane Wahl has a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from the University of Florida. She has earned a Six Sigma Black Belt, CPCU, CLU, and other designations throughout her career in the insurance industry. The current obsession with Fake News and Misinformation/ Disinformation is nothing new. This course divides episodes of American/ World history into five categories of fake news: The Guise of Scientific Research, Documentary, Ideological/Political, Emotional, and Lack of Knowledge. Some examples of fake news are humorous, some mildly disingenuous, and some startling. We’ll discuss stories that were reported and widely accepted but were misleading, such as the Mozart Effect, danger of cholesterol in eggs, Ancient Astronaut Theory, disappearance of Amelia Earhart, the Salem Witch Trials, Yellow Journalism, Rosa Parks, photographs of bodies after Civil War battles, the Big Lie, and other examples.

After her graduation from Kutztown University with a BS in Art Education, Joan also traveled among four schools and used an “art cart.” She subsequently earned a degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education, served as a high school Art & Music department head, taught AP Art and many other art courses, and received a Master’s Degree in Education when online learning was a new concept. She is a self-taught private chef and has taught cooking classes. After moving to the Orlando area, she met some wine enthusiasts who introduced her to the world of studying wine. Theresa was hooked and her new passions became studying wine and pairing food and wine. She holds a SafeServ Manager Certificate and an Alcohol Server Certificate. She has passed the Introduction Level of Court of Master Sommeliers Exam, a Certification in Sherry, and continues to study and learn as much as she can about wine. Now she enjoys teaching others about wine as well as food and wine pairings.

Well…in this course we are going to dive into the gray and muddy areas of government policy and specifically how it relates to money and the economy. We will have moderated discussions on topics that highlight the difficulty of balancing economics, social wellbeing, and the factors that influence our points of view. Join Open Studio for creative time to work on any art project, in any medium, that you choose. You’ll enjoy the support of your peers and Meryl will provide help if you’d like it. Each of the three classes will start with a short demo or talk to address common obstacles. Class One: We will review how to look at an inanimate object and the various ways of breaking it down to be able to draw it accurately. Class Two: We will review basic color theory and using color mediums such as colored pencil, watercolor, acrylic, etc. Class Three: We will brainstorm ways to utilize our failed attempts and give them new life as reborn works of art.

She worked on creative technology as part of her corporate career until starting her own mural/decorative painting business in 1995. Meryl also creates unique 3D dog portraits upon commission, managed the Celebration Art & Wine Strolls, and is a member of Celebration Lifelong Steering Committee. Meryl continues to learn new arts and craft mediums to teach at Celebration Lifelong.

In Painting with Wool (also known as flat felting) you will learn to create a 2-dimensional painting using wool. Using special barbed tipped needles, you will create a painting by needling onto a base piece of felt your personal selection of wonderful wool colors. Meryl will supply images for inspiration or for copying to help you create your own unique image. Or feel free to bring your own photos of a beach sunset, landscape, or flowers. The result will be a wonderful textural art piece that you can frame and hang on a wall or sew onto another object such as a cushion or cloth pocketbook. You might prick a finger or two a few times; otherwise, it is very easy on the hands. This course is for beginners and any creative souls!

The concept “Principles to Live By” was inspired by the autobiography of Benjamin Franklin. He identified principles/virtues to improve his life and then adopted each one to focus on within a certain time frame. But no one has a monopoly on identifying a correct set of principles or virtues. Each person should determine a set appropriate to their circumstances. This course will be centered on discussions, a give-and-take, to explore the optimal blend of principles to live by. Our goals will be to assist you to think for yourself, chart your own course of action and formulate principles to live by to guide your life.

Stephen has served as an Assistant District Attorney and a City Solicitor and Counsel in Massachusetts. He is a Trustee Chairman of a major trust estate. His current business interests include the ownership, operation, and management of 250 residential and commercial units in Western Massachusetts and Central Florida. He is a former instructor of Macroeconomics at Springfield Technical Community College, Business Law at Emanuelle College, and Seminar Lecturer in Real Estate Development and Condominium Law. Dolores Salvo was the Supervisor of Mathematics at a suburban school district near Pittsburgh where she taught high school math and English. She conducted workshops and seminars in math pedagogy and educational software at the national, state, and regional levels. After retiring from teaching in Pennsylvania, she taught math for several happy years at Celebration K-12. She currently teaches courses at Celebration Lifelong and served as the Chair of the Lifelong Steering Committee. Dolores enjoys teaming with her husband Don to deliver lectures and facilitate the Lifelong Book Club. She earned degrees from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, the University of Pittsburgh, and Duquesne University.

This workshop teaches a highly successful method of writing a ten-minute play. Although the workshop is designed for first-time playwrights, many people have taken it several times. In Part 1, the instructors assist the participants in selecting play topics that are likely to be successful and producible. Once the participants have selected their story and characters, the instructors encourage and guide the participants as they complete their first drafts. Classes consist of reading the plays as they have been written so far with supportive class feedback. Note: This is a nine-class course. Participants are expected to enroll in Parts 1, 2 and 3.

A professionally trained dancer/actor, he is a proud member of Actors’ Equity and has performed in over 60 productions with the Kenley Players. Don earned degrees from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, the University of Pittsburgh, Duquesne University, and was a Fellow in the School of Speech and Drama at Northwestern University.

Will Newkirk’s award-winning play [Miss] received the 2017 Charles M. Getchell Prize from the Southeastern Theatre Conference. Plots are re-worked, characters redefined and dialogue scrutinized. The third part of this workshop begins with polishing the plays for the final class which is a staged reading for Lifelong members. The playwrights cast their plays, supervise final dress readings, and experience the excitement of seeing their original work being presented. Following the staged reading, the instructors provide concrete steps for the playwright to take to submit their play for professional production and publication. Plays written in this workshop have been performed throughout the United States, received important awards, and been published in international anthologies of the Best New Plays of the Year. But most of all, we will have had fun working as a group to create original works of drama. Note: This is a nine-class course. Participants are expected to enroll in Parts 1, 2 and 3.
